Winter Solstice
by Rosamunde Pilcher
Beautiful. It's crazy how well Rosamunde Pilcher is able to set a scene, write about domestic life and everyday things and making it as beautiful and wonderful as descriptions of the world in fairy tales and magical fantasy books. It goes for all her books, and this one is no exception. The reason it's not 5 stars for me, is because halfway through you realize that this, of course, is a fantasy too, and many things are a bit too convenient - but it doesn't matter, because it's a wonderful story with characters who feel real enough for the conveniences of the story structure to become apparent, which is more a testament to her understanding of life and humanity than a criticism of the book. It's a story that says something about life, grief and love in all their forms, and how important it is to welcome people with open arms. It's hard to describe, there's so much of life in here that is so well written and thought out. So in short, I loved it, and I will be revisiting this for many Decembers to come.
