Shadows on the Rock
by Willa Cather
I went in with a drudging attitude. Purely based on the little I knew of the author and time period. Boy was I wrong. I read the book in two days and had difficultly putting it down. The author creates such a rich picture of early Quebec that it's hard not to become fond of the characters.
The only, petty, critique would be that, as a non-French-speaker, there were parts I have no idea if I missed something. Some of the French passages were quite long and I feel like I might have.
Following the calendar year of the main characters almost freed the author to not be pressured to create some ridiculous drama that I think authors of today would. It was wonderful to just read the day-to-day and become immersed in the lives of the apothecary and his kind daughter.
