Clues to the Universe by Christina Li

4.0

Told in dual perspectives and set in the 1908s, two things I love in a book. Ro has transferred to a school where she knows no one and she is still grieving over the sudden death of her father. She has to deal with bullies and conversations where students try to guess her biracial ethnicity (she is white and Chinese). Benji, who is white, is lonely and aimless because his best friend, Amir, moved across the country and all he wants to do is read his favorite comic books.
Things I loved: How Ro and Benji become friends and how their caring natures sustain their friendships. This book had a really good exploration of loss and grief. Loved the comic book tie-in. Just a solid middle grade book about friendship.
Things I didn't love: adults watching bullying happening and doing nothing,
Spoilerthe way that Benji's dad is sort of tied up with a bow at the end felt unrealistic to me as did the bully fixing their project.

I think this would be a good read aloud for grade 6.
