This Shattered World by Meagan Spooner, Amie Kaufman
4.0

This second book in the series did what it needed to - diverted me from thinking about being home sick. It's very YA - teenagers fighting wars - but I enjoyed it. The point of view switches between the rebel Flynn and the soldier Jubilee. The little interludes between the chapters didn't work for me and added nothing to the narrative. I understand their point but don't think they were needed to make it.

I guess this series is technically dystopian, as the rebels are Irish with language from "ancient Earth," but living and fighting on a distant terraformed planet. I found the Irish character of the rebels a little odd. Jubilee is black and asian, so that added an unusual spin, and there is a married same sex couple in the rebels.

I was engaged enough by the plot and the characters to keep reading. I will read the final book in the series.

Recommended for readers who like YA fantasy romance.
