The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

3.0

At the outset I enjoyed this much more than expected as I’m not into themes of afterlife and fantasy. But the premise was intriguing, a library full of books of the other lives you could have lived, if you’d made different choices. A library you visit when hovering between life and death. The writing was light and easy. Nora’s life current life is at its lowest ebb. She’s failed everybody, most especially herself. She doesn’t want to live any more. Can a visit to the Midnight Library change her circumstances? What happens if she can return and see her life without regrets? Can she exist in a better life? Quite a lot of philosophy layered throughout. And though it continued to be a pleasant enough read, it became a bit tedious with Nora not being able to find contentment. But, I guess that was the message. It also tended to be a bit too superficial and saccharine for my taste.
