The Turn of the Screw
by Henry James
Its written pre-1900 and is considered true literature, so beware that it's really written for the above-average reader.
The story is great - no gore, no in-your-face scary stuff, just good old fashioned imagination and intrigue.
It's original in many senses, although if it seems familiar it's because so much other content has drawn from it whether it's other books or movies/etc.
A great read if you are able to follow along, and rewarding for those who finish.
