Final Fantasy VII Remake: Traces of Two Pasts by Kazushige Nojima
3.0
3.5/5
It was quite a nice read and as a big Final Fantasy 7 fan, I enjoyed learning more about the backstories of the characters and the different perspectives.
However, most of the interesting backstories are already explained throughout the games so this books is more focused around the impact of those events and the after effects (more so in Tifa’s story) and the core elements such as the sephiroth scene is skipped over and instead focused on how Tifa got to Midgar etc, which is interesting to learn about but not something necessary for those looking for something that will give a more deeper understanding of the characters than already shown through the games.
I found Arieth’s story to be a lot more interesting with more insight into her life in the slums and her relationship with Elmyra but it’s more of an extended flashback from the game with the key elements already being shown prior.
The pacing can be quite slow at times too, with many scenes feeling like the side quest equivalents but there are also many fun interactions and also some more in depth look into some of the new original characters included in the remake.
Definitely a fun and enjoyable read for those fans of the games but knowledge of the games is required to read this or else it’ll be confusing and the descriptions of the setting isn’t as great as it could be so it’s helpful knowing how everything looks. I would love to have a book for the rest of the characters and learn more.
