This book hoovered between 3 and 4 stars throughout the book. I was definately engaged and blitz through this book (a good sign).

The relationship between Bear and Otter was sweet ... however, Bear started out things oddly passive aggressively and hostile ... sometimes he was confusingly dramatic and immature given that he's essentially the grown-up guardian of a 9 year old kid. And speaking of the kid, it was relief that this book did not feature a overly cute (therefore annoying) kid ... he was charming and funny ... but perhaps a little two grown-up for his supposed age?

But perhaps what sunk this book a bit for me was the repetition and inconsistencies. We went over and over things and I got bored. I skimmed parts of this book as a result.

This author's writing style sometimes doesn't agree with me - but I do overall enjoy his work. Perhaps the biggest impact on my opinion of this book is the late breaking drama where Bear's mother absentee mother returns with oddly conservative views and homophobia that feels a little out of place? Drama for the sake of drama ... and perhaps not all that necessary?

I am willing to give book two a chance ... sometimes it takes a few books to get into a series?
