Tin Man by Sarah Winman

4.0

Someone asked me what this book was about while I was still finishing it up, and I had some trouble trying to pin that “what” down. I’m not sure the Goodreads description does it justice—it says a bit too much. I think the copy on the galley I read says it best: “an unforgettable and heartbreaking novel celebrating love in all its forms.” The writing has a pleasant subtlety to it, and part of the joy of reading it is getting slowly closer and closer to the heart of the story as you read more and more, like peeling the rind off an orange and pulling away wedges of the fruit one by one.

It’s refreshing to see love’s complexities explored beyond infidelity and strict heterosexuality. Relationships of note take many forms, are expressed in many ways, and are of no more or less importance as a result of these differences. On top of this, the book is overall very poetic, emphasizing how life at its most real is poetic and when viewed from afar follows a kind of poetic logic. I’m happy I could read this, and I give it something like a 4.5 on the low end.
