looking at this book objectively, that is to say apart from its...dynamic relationship to pop culture, its not actually as horrible as bitter millennial men on the internet will tell you. its by no means a literary masterpiece but Stephanie Meyers' writing style isn't as remarkably bad as ive heard people say it is. its not amazing but its not awful, its just kind of a non-factor.
the non romantic plot isn't strong at all and its pacing is all out of wack but it is just strong enough to add at least a little sense of paranormal angst to the atmosphere which id say is where the book is strongest; its atmospheric elements are deeply romantic and melancholic; the pacific north western setting is something i found myself lost in throughout the series. and its in these atmospheric elements i think Meyers' individual writing style comes through the most. these parts of the book have some genuinely beautiful prose!

the romance is very corny and there are lines of dialogue that were physically painful to read, but the two romantic leads do have chemistry with each other and if we're being honest here, no one is reading Twilight for its brilliant discourse between the characters. This is the same series that gave us gems such as "you better hold on tight spider monkey! 😜" and "bÃÃttle skaurws 🤠" (two phrases that I quote daily). so if you really dont like a side of age appropriate cringy banter with your cheesy sparkly vampire teen romance, then this probably isnt for you. but if you're fine to embrace the cringe and just read a not-necessarily-awful angsty teen romance book set in the greenest town in america for 2 and a half hours as you try to stave of a depressive episode, then you'll love this.
