How to Be Remy Cameron

hopeful

This book was so adorably sincere. Our main character, Remy, is given an essay prompt from his English AP teacher to define one’s self. Of course panic ensues, how do you really know yourself, especially with all the labels given to you through time? Adopted. Black. Gay. Is there more than just these categories?
The introduction is a bit overwhelming, especially with many characters being introduced. But as the story settles down and becomes focus, I ended up loving Remy and his cast of characters. His extremely supportive parents, loyal best friends, and his Insta-love love interest.
A lot of of the side storylines connect towards the main theme of the story towards the end. The quiet moments with characters and the writing is what made this solid. Regardless of the high school tropes and a bit too many Harry Potter references, the heart and soul of this book shines through. A great coming-of-age tale.
Hell, even as an adult now, I’m finding out new things about myself. Labels really do have a double edge sword sometimes. Of course we can be more than just one thing. We’re always constantly learning and changing. It’s nice to know queer teens have these stories. Also healing for queer adults who may have not had these growing up.
