I struggled to rate this book. I’m torn between 3-3.5 stars. I wanted this book to be a 5 star read due to all the hype, but I just don’t think Kristin Hannah is for me. I have never read one of her books and got this book due to FOMO. Boy will that be the last time. This book was one of the most depressing books I’ve ever read. There is just non stop dismal events. I literally put the book down multiple times because it just wasn’t enjoyable. It also really seemed to drag in the middle. There were about 150-200 pages where I just really wanted to skim over so I could find out the ending. Which I feel like I could tell at every twist and turn where the author was going because she seems like a sadist and I knew only bad things were coming. The end kind of took a weird turn that seemed out of character but what do I know? I really enjoy historical fictions and I am okay with sad books, but this just wasn’t for me at this current time.
