Mercy Watson: Something Wonky This Way Comes by Kate DiCamillo

3.0

I have enjoyed all of Kate DiCamillo's books and when I saw her name on this book, I was excitedly curious. This seemed to be very different from [b:The Tale of Despereaux|37190|The Tale of Despereaux|Kate DiCamillo|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1412211823l/37190._SX50_.jpg|1508178] and the other books she is well known. I offered to read this to my two youngest children and we sat down and began.

The Mercy Watson series IS very different from her award winning books. The target audience is for a beginner reader rather than one just getting started on solo reads. The proof is in the pudding and my son was engaged the entire duration of the read which is not common and was unexpected as this book was a longer read than he has been used to. He answered all my questions accurately and with enthusiasm and excitement. For this reason, the book is well received.

As a parent reader, I found it rather repetitive. The story itself was also pretty blah. I didn't realize this was a series until after I finished the book so I'm also a little annoyed with myself as it's never cool to start midway through a series.

My kids love them and if my kids are reading then I am pleased.
