The Unbroken by C.L. Clark

5.0

I am not sure I am able to find the words to describe just how astonishingly brilliant this book is. C.L Clark draws from various colonial histories and experiences to create a beautifully realistic and magical experience. Though the story is about Touraine and Luca - both women with complete opposite backgrounds - the underlying is a story of struggle, sacrifice and choice in a country controlled by a coloniser. Autonomy with oneself and one’s country.

Touraine is such a strong MC. Her character development (as well as the others) was top notch. Clark’s characters are raw, flawed and realistic.
Additionally, the LGBTQ+ representation in this story was sublime.

This is all done while integrating a wonderfully rich lost magic system. The story just seemed to flow from the page. I never once felt it was forced. The world building felt effortless. It kept me at the edge of my seat near the end!

As someone who studied post-colonial theory and literature in post grad - I’m enthralled with this book!

I cannot wait for the next one!!
