It had potential to be really good but ended up falling flat. I found it boring 90% of the time.
Some of the things that happened in this book didn’t need to happen if you just thought about it for more than 5 minutes. It often felt like there were scenes the author wanted to include, thought up a convenient way to get there without thinking if it logistically made the most sense? For example the structure of the elections made no sense if the deciding factor was a popularity vote by Ellow’s constituents. There was really no need for the candidates to stay in the castle or any events other than the debates and maybe the interrogations. But alas, we needed forced proximity somehow.
Also you’d think something involving elections would entail more idk…politics? Barely any of that. Instead I got a lukewarm enemies to lovers storyline that I could not care less about (when I wasn’t gagging at their cringey romance scenes). Their chemistry felt inauthentic and was not convincing at all. Generally, I also didn’t really like or feel invested in any of the characters until the ending scene.
The last couple chapters left me curious about where this is going but I’m still deciding whether or not I want to continue this series. For now, I will not be continuing.
