Treacle Walker by Alan Garner

5.0

Many low reviews on this book from people who found it ‘inaccessible’ or ‘didn’t get it’, which I think is a shame. The joy of Treacle Walker is that it leads you in with the fantastical and then asks you to spend time figuring it out. I got so much more out of this book after a bit of research, and learned a lot about British folklore and the Cheshire dialect that I found fascinating both as context for the book and on their own merits. Best Booker longlister I’ve read so far, and I will be buying my own copy ASAP. I sincerely hope it wins.
