Hero at the Fall
by Alwyn Hamilton
I'm not really sure why I wasn't more emotionally invested in Hero at the Fall. Though I had mixed feelings about book 1, I absolutely loved book 2 and was really excited to see how Hamilton wrapped up the series.
Two big things that stood out to me were:
1. A lot of this book is very grim. That's to be expected from the finale in a series about war + revolution I guess but the balance between heavy plot points and light-hearted moments amongst friends was one of the reasons this series had previously worked so well for me.
2.There were a TON of convenient loopholes that repeatedly let Amani and her close circle get out of situations where the reader had repeatedly been told that at least one specific character wouldn't survive. Rather than this feeling like a neat, unexpected twist it just made me very frustrated. The rules of the world should apply to everyone in the story -- or at least apply consistently -- and they definitely didn't in Hero at the Fall.
I'm not sure, now, how I feel about the whole series. Traitor to the Throne is still one of the best middle books in a trilogy I've ever read and the world this series is set in was so rich that I'm willing to forgive some of the things that bugged me about Rebel of the Sands. There just isn't much that redeems Hero at the Fall for me, though, which is a bummer as I'd been so excited to finally finish this series.
