Leviathan Falls by James S.A. Corey

3.0

I feel kind of weird about Leviathan Falls? It was still very much a quick and entertaining read that kept me on my toes, but something about it didn't exactly click all the way with me. I'm not sure this managed to deliver everything it promised to deliver? But that could be because I had different expectations about certain things.

So. I found it really weird that the stakes didn't seem high enough here especially considering how the previous book went. It took quite some time for things to get moving and I think there was a lot of focus put on characters (mainly Tanaka) and situations that din't quite add much relevance to the plot. That ended up taking page time away from 1) real world-building development and 2) giving answers about what was happening without dumping information on readers in a convoluted way.

The plot was also... odd. Spoilers ahead!
I had some expectations with this series as it reached the ending in the sense that I thought the final bad guy here was going to be the beings we'd been learning about since Leviathan Wakes. And that wasn't it at all. So I found it really odd that we simultaneously went back to the beginning while not... taking any risks? Not going the distance with what had been established? I felt a little bit like the authors wrote themselves into a corner with this super powerful entity that humanity would never be able to fight against and win and so they decided to just give us one human being to fight against and one human being to sacrifice to all of this. That bothered me.

I did like most character arcs regarding the Roci crew, though! There were some full circle moments there that worked for me--even though they made me really sad. I also didn't expect the epilogue to happen the way it did, but I wasn't at all upset about it.

After everything, I do think this series was an excellent read. It did a lot of things right throughout its run and always managed to make me connect and feel for the characters.
