After listening to Dungeon Crawler Carl, I was interested in trying some more LitRPG stuff. This book came well recommended online so I thought I’d give it a go.
On the whole, I enjoyed reading the book - it is basically a power fantasy following the journey of Zac from an average man alone in the woods to the strongest man in the world. I found the System generally interesting and engaging enough, although I found some of the cultivation and grading system a bit over complicated and slightly confusing. The scale of the book and power levels were a lot bigger than I was expecting and in some ways I preferred the earlier stages when Zac was less powerful to the later stages of the book.
The book was quite long and I do feel like it could have been shorter. Once the incursion is over, the book changes speed and the world changes quite a bit - I think this could have marked an end to the book honestly, as the extra stuff after that felt a bit overly long. Generally the book just felt like it would benefit from having an editor take another pass at it - there was some weird word choices and overly long and verbose sentences that took me out of what I was reading. There were also a couple of issues with tenses that confused me a little but these issues didn’t detract too much from the overall quality.
I enjoyed the book well enough, although at the moment I am not sure how quickly I would want to go on to read the sequel, and it was fun to try a second example of LitRPG
