A wildly enthralling story with an incredible, glamorous world-building surrounding the main heroine of the tale, Evelyn Hugo. I simply could not put the book down and felt like I needed to devour it - in that way, the glamour and seduction of Evelyn Hugo really did translate to the page.
One important thing brining this down from a full 5-star rating is the way in which race becomes a categorizing, surface-level character development mechanism instead of giving of us any actual meaningful background story. Why are both Monique and Evelyn POC if those parts of their identities are only briefly referenced? This of course all within the framework that Taylor Jenkins-Reid is a white, straight woman writing their stories - and you can tell. It also did annoy me that Monique as a character seemed mostly a placemat to develop Evelyn’s storyline, and I felt like her emotions and storylines were often cut short/not given the time they needed to mature and make us understand her character.
Overall though, an amazing read!
