Crusaders: The Epic History of the Wars for the Holy Lands by Dan Jones

4.0

There are a lot of little anecdotes in this book that made me chuckle (who knew so many medieval rulers drank themselves to death?) but more so, this overview of the many crusader groups is a must-read for anyone who wants to put the present into perspective. I’ll be rereading this one in Dutch since the epilogue has exactly the painful reminders that history can be used and misused in the context of so-called postmodern crusaders.
