The Stand by Stephen King

This book was really wonderfully constructed, and I got very invested very quickly. For a first foray into King’s works, I think this was a really solid read.

One of the most interesting aspects of this book was its seemingly constant reference to characters’ free will; that is, to the chances they had to alter their path. Sometimes it was described as the last vestiges of their sanity crying out for them to stop, sometimes it was described as remnants of a prior morality. There are examples for most every character — I appreciate the anti-predestination bent of the book. Everyone had a chance to change, to reform, and some characters did it too late, if at all. But everyone had a chance, even to the end.

Overall, however, it was a fun read. It’s so long that I’m not sure I’ll ever re-read it, but it was good to sink my teeth into something has hefty as this so early into the year. This book has motivated me to try out King’s The Dark Tower series at some point, but not before I re-read the Lord of the Rings.
