Hell Gate is one of 10 books in the Twisted Legends Collection. This collection of stories by 10 authors includes "dark, twisted reimaginings of infamous legends well-known throughout the world."

Hell Gate is a reimagining of the hierarchy and ruling powers of the demon realm, including Lucifer, Lilith, and a variety of Demons.  The story includes nods to cryptic legends, such as The Jersey Devil and Mothman.  Veronica Eden builds the plot from these legends, creating a story of survival and triumph of one "lost girl".

Lily is an orphan who has experienced emotional and physical abuse, wears the scars of a past trauma, and has been rejected and feared by foster families and peers.  As she approaches her 18th birthday and her release from the foster care system, she takes on a dare that proves a local myth is really a gate to Hell.

With three male demons haunting her and promising her demise, she struggles to believe the legend is true.  But when she and the demons are attacked, she can no longer deny their existence. Lily finds herself on the run for her life and struggles to resist the dark pull she feels towards her three captors.  During their flight, Lily begins to uncover the power that has been hidden within her and for the first time experiences what it feels like to be cherished and protected from harm.

Lily, Matthias, Alder and Valerian encounter and fight a variety of demons who seek to destroy them.  The battle scenes are graphic and suspenseful and leave your fearing the outcome. But those moods are finely balanced with the slow burn, tension and erotic encounters Lily experiences.

I really enjoyed this book for all the above reasons.  I loved how the author provided glimpses into the future at the end of the book; 3 months later, 9 years later, a lifetime later... very cool conclusion.  I had a hard time putting this book down and frequently thought of it when I had other responsibilities to attend to, lol.

This book is a dark, paranormal romance with explicit violence and sexual scenes which should only be read by mature adults.  Always check for trigger warnings.

VERY spicy: 5 chili peppers

Tropes include: Enemies to Lovers, Demon and human realms, "who hurt you?", Why Choose, Fated Mates, and Intense Battles

Favorite Quote:
"The ones who kidnapped me wanted to kill me and they almost succeeded.  What they didn't know is that every time I've been knocked down, abused, rejected, tossed aside and forgotten, I've gotten the fuck back up and kept going.  I survived and I'll keep fighting for my right to exist, to live on in spite of those who would rather see me dead."

Slay, Lily. Slay.
