There are 3 plots in this book:
1) Captain Kirk & the Enterprise crew assist a planet during a mining boon / disaster
2) Lt. Sulu & detached officers assist @ a space station leading to the planet
3) Spock & Chekov are sent to another planet to solve an issue related to item 1

The book tries to fit an A, B, & C plot into this one novel & it just doesn't work for me.
