First of all, if you plan to read this book, ensure you've read the first book, "The Poppy War." I recommend skimming through it if it's been a while since you finished, just to refresh your memory about the characters. This book introduces a lot of new characters, so it's helpful to have a quick reminder. Also, be sure to check the content warnings beforehand, as there are vividly described gore scenes (given the war setting) and instances of sexual assault.

I must admit, I enjoyed the second book more than the first one. Really. Despite its hefty 600 pages, it's a worthwhile read. The story is meticulously crafted, with explanations for nearly everything that unfolds. I found very few plot holes, if any, as I was thoroughly immerse in the narrative. The vivid descriptions of war and brutality made me feel uncomfortable, stirring up a strong reaction that stayed with me even after I finished reading. It's a proof that the author wrote it well.

If you're seeking romance in this book, you'll be disappointed. There's little to no romance between Rin and either Nezha or Kitay, as they're all caught up in the chaos of war, where betrayals abound. Romance becomes less important amid the chaos and challenges they experience.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, despite its intimidating thickness. However, it's not the type of book I'd re-read in the future, primarily due to its brutality and the overwhelming nature of its content. If you've read the first book, "The Poppy War," "The Dragon Republic" is a must-read.
