Feverborn by Karen Marie Moning
3.0
Don't get me wrong, the Fever series is one of the best YA/Supernatural/Romance series out there, in my opinion. But like every long(ish) franchise, it's starting to show some cracks here and there although, to be fair, some of them are about personal taste.
Mac's inner monologues are getting really tiresome and both her and Jada are becoming a bit of a cliché 'strong, independent woman'. I get they're tough as nails but I feel like they are constantly reminding you of how badass they are, how much pain they can take, etc, etc. I'm cool with a bit (or a lot) of action but this constant posturing is slowly starting to make me see them as the opposite. No one who truly believes herself that strong needs reminding everyone of that.
About the inner monologue, I like Mac's evolution of thought and how you can really get how her character changed from book I to now. But having her going so long about her inner turmoil is kind boring. It got to the point where I didn't mind skipping the whole thing, and to be honest it didn't mess my understanding of the story at all.
Story-wise, although I think most of the book acts as filler, things are progressing. We get to see how each and every major character is slotting their plans into place, and the suspense as we wait for the moment when sh*t hits the fan is awesome. Stuff is bound to get very serious in the next book: Mac's move at the end of the book, Jada's complexity, Ryodan's wtf decisions (and the new player they caused), Christian's evolution and new objectives, Cruces' behind-the-scenes manipulations, they all add up to an interesting sh*tstorm to come. I can't wait.
