A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid
1.0

1.5- the book is like our main character, effy: pretty on the outside but bland af on the inside

giving it +.5 stars because the writing itself wasn’t bad. were there some questionable visuals? yes (multiple mentions of people’s arm hair??)

cannot give it a higher rating because it handled major themes of SA, misogyny, and bigotry SO poorly. effy’s experience with SA was very weirdly handled and felt like it was only included to give her anxiety & tie her as a parallel to a (very predictable) plot twist. everyone was misogynistic af with no real development tied to it— it felt like it was only included to give a false sense of making effy’s life harder. effy as a character was xenophobic AF and the only “development” of this occurred with her “falling in love” with the dude she literally only hated for his nationality and the fact that he checked out a library book she wanted.

overall- handled major themes incredibly poorly using them as a convenient way to add to “plot twists” that could be figured out within 2 words of the character involved being introduced.
