I know the author did a tremendous amount of research and that all the events in the book and characters are composites of real events and real people’s actual experience. But, some characters seemed flat to me. Clay and his father are monsters with no redeeming qualities. On the other hand, Fiona, and Mrs. Darby are saints. It is a book marketed to adolescents; it probably doesn’t bother them. The book was selected for 10th graders at my school and they all raved about it. But I found it unsatisfying. Although, it was really cool to learn about Fort Mose.
