God this book was a wasted opportunity. You give the cool space terrorist group their own book - terrorists who have caused Galaxy-wide disasters killing hundreds of thousands, purely for the violent chaos of it all. A book focusing on one of their most prominent leader’s origin story… This should be an easy way to give a cool, very antagonistic pov - the dark underside to the High Republic! Complete tonal shift to the main-line novels. Violent, aggressive, ruthless! Well it’s not that!! Let’s make Lourna Dee - a violent psychopath in all other appearances - a bland, relatively
-balanced, protagonist who has a slightly-grey moral compass and loves to make friends and build alliances. I’m so lost at what they were thinking. A mild anti-hero portrayal at best and it’s so disappointing that it fails to deliver any serviceable character piece here. This character didn’t need a half-hearted redemption arc and it feels bizarre to place in the middle of the main, ongoing Nihil conflict. It just feels like High Republic shovelwear. The book also ends exactly where it starts, there’s no large movement in plot here rendering it pretty inessential reading to phase 1.
To be positive, the world building here is great - it covers some very underused areas of the Star Wars galaxy. The pace is rapid and the plot is serviceable. It’s a smooth and easy read and thankfully, being a script, very quick to read through.
