The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

5.0

did i fall in love in the horror genre because of this book? yes. 'the haunting of hill house' is a truly chilling story that will make you uneasy and doubtful towards the characters. at times i felt like i was crawling in the dark, trying to solve something that wasn't meant to be solved. i thought the last pages would solve everything but as i've closed the book i wasn't sure what was real and what wasn't.

spoilers ahead:

- is the book meant to be read in a literal way? was eleanor truly disturbed by the presence of the house?
- my favourite and main theory: was eleanor the echo of past lives that came and went in the hill house? the ongoing sisters theme, mentions of twins, the ending (wreckage of a vehicle in the same spot as the original owner).
- was eleanor a ghost that they tried get rid of? she only wanted to come home and get some piece. but theodore grew meaner, the planchete spoke for eleanor. she also often mentioned how she is not noticed by anyone. how she isn't the part of the group

okay, my brain is all fuzzy - i'm sure this book needs a re-read. it's not often when i read a book and think: was any of this even real?
