”I would rather lose the case than lose you.”

I have to give it to Josh Lanyon: she knows how to write a mystery. And The Mermain Murders was not only a great mystery book, but it is now one of my favorite books she’s written. It was a delight to read, especially because I had no idea what to expect from it!

The Mermain Murders was kind of creepy at times and the suspense was really well done. The story was fast paced and it kept me on the edge of my seat, and it had just the right amount of action to make things even more interesting. I kept trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together, and right when I thought I had everything solved: a twist! And a pretty great one at that.

Jason and Sam were great characters. I loved that we learned bits and pieces about them and their history throughout the story. It made it feel like they were also part of this big mystery the author created. Although I do wish we got to know Sam a little better than we did.

The romance was the best type of slow burn. Jason and Sam were at odds when they first met, so as the story progressed we saw them going from reluctant partners to something more. It was fun reading about them as they got used to working together and got comfortable with one another. Especially when they were bickering, if I’m being honest.

I’m really curious to see what’s going to happen with Jason and Sam in the next installment. It seems like the second book will focus on Jason’s area of expertise, and I really want to see how Sam will work with that. Too bad I have to wait until next year to read it. ):
