The Year My Life Went Down the Toilet by Jake Maia Arlow

4.5

This was so good! The main character is chronically ill (Crohn's, aka a "bathroom disease") and queer and oh so relatable to this queer IBS girlie. It is a middle grade book kind of right on the cusp of early YA (the character is 12 and starting to date, etc.). Thought I don't have IBD like the character and her support group best friends l, I do have IBS and always have to some degree so I wish this book had existed back when I was 12. I hope I would have been brave enough to read it because it would have really made me feel seen. It's all about figuring out who you are and relationships, and how chronic illness can affect those things. So good!
