I really wanted to like this, and despite the reviews advising me this was going to be a slog, I jumped on into it anyway.

And I regret not listening to those other reviewers. The pacing was so slow I felt like I was fighting through treacle to get through every page. Any moments of suspense or build up quickly fizzled out, becoming long and boring chapters.

While the characters were certainly fully fleshed out and felt like real people, they just weren’t interesting enough to keep me reading. The prose, like most Stephen King, is fairly workman-like. Nothing wrong with it, but combined with uninteresting characters and stagnant pacing, it turned the story into a chore rather than something I wanted to pick up and read.

If you want to read well-developed (albeit uninteresting) characters deal with the day to day and often mundane challenges of an apocalypse, this book is for you. If not, I’d steer clear.
