Usually I'm not a huge fan of the "woe is me I'm biracial" genre but this one really did it for me. The writing style --dialogue and prose-- as well as the plot are superb.
I really wasn't expecting a whole lot going in but it exceeded my expectations and is one of the better books I have read in the last three or so years.
There are many things to say as for the lesson of the book; perhaps one of the most important ones is what happens to people when who, for good or bad reasons, aspire towards a certain class position and have something that can be bought and sold (even their own identity). To me, that resonated in our current, even past Jane's biracial-ness. It's a much-needed story about class, class aspiration, and social capital. That is why I think it deserves five stars.
