The Unbroken explores the topic of colonialism through an intricately constructed world and complicated characters. It was a slow but interesting read that didn't shy away from the dark and brutal theme of empire and colonialism. It was very character centered, exploring people in two very different positions, their power, their agnecy, their loyalties. At times I found myself very frustrated at choices made by both the main characters, but their mistakes make them nuanced and fascinating. I'm interested to see where book two takes us.
