Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

3.0

I've read many glowing reviews of this book, and don't quite understand what all the fuss is about. I didn't enjoy the start of the book much and had to force myself to stick with it. The storytelling felt awkward, with sections such as Camille describing her first experience of masturbation feeling like they were shoe-horned in for shock value. The storytelling did improve somewhat as the book progressed, but, much like the plot, it failed to wow me.

This was a fairly easy read once you're past the first couple of chapters, but I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend this. I was able to secondguess the twist in the tale fairly early on, which for me always adds to my disappointment. I like a 'whodunnit' to keep me guessing until the final page, which Sharp Objects did not deliver.
