The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath

1.0

um ????? after everything i’ve heard about sylvia plath and her “great writing”, i had never heard anyone bring up how incredibly racist she was ?????

i had to look it up after she said something along the lines of “looking yellow like a chinaman” in the first 10 pages. from what i’ve seen others reference, plath proceeds to throw in horribly racist remarks and slurs throughout the book. i only truly read a few chapters from the end, after that initial racist remark, solely because i wanted to see how she wrote someone suffering from mental illness but the ending didn’t seem to me as amazing and grand as i’ve always heard it be built up to be.

this one is definitely for the ones who wanna be fake woke/fake feminists and base their whole personality around psych wards and grippy socks.

instead of wasting your time reading this, i suggest “girl, interrupted” instead. the movie, with winona ryder, angelina jolie and brittany murphy, as well. truly iconic. much better way to spend your time.

final note: just because someone might be a good writer, doesn’t mean they get to have their racism/bigotry excused and looked over.
