The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty
4.0

Thanks to my Goodreads group members, this book found itself on my radar. I am not a huge fan of classic reads, as sometimes they go right over my head. However, this one was definitely something special, and I mostly enjoyed it.

The book begins like any other typical horror book. A seemingly normal family who then slowly begins to unravel as something otherwordly creeps in. The relationship between Chris and Regan was beautifully articulated, and as a reader, I found the grief, fear, and sheer terror for her daughter palpable.

The imagery was unsettling, disturbing, and revolting. My goodness, I am no stranger to gore. However, these scenes will remain embedded in my memory for a long, long time. I wouldn't say this was a typical possession story. There wasn't any long buildup, the priests themselves being sceptical about believing Regan was experiencing anything other than some form of extreme mental disorder. It at times felt very psychological, and it worked for the time period this book was written in.

The only reason this book wasn't five stars for me is simply due to some scenes dragging a little too much for me. Especially with the detective. It felt like too much wording before the point of the intended conversation was reached. Other than that, it was a solid and memorable read. I have no desire to watch the movie. The book is quite sufficient for me
