I love poetry and I love whales, and indeed anything to do with the sea. So this was definitely a must read for me.
The first thing I noticed upon opening the book, was the wonderful thick quality of the pages. It felt really luxurious. Next were the wonderful illustrations, which prefaced each section of the book.
The book is written as 5 distinct sections. Each one starts with a series of Nicola's wonderful paintings, then a short introduction to a particular species of whale, and finally a few poems about that species. The poetry itself was beautiful, educational and, at times, heartbreaking. I found it particularly fascinating to learn that if we could restore whales to pre-whaling levels that they could remove 1.7 billion tons of CO2 from the atmosphere every year, which is the equivalent of emissions from all the cars in the US.
I'm going to end my review with part of the poem that struck me the most. It really bought home how much damage it's humans have done.
If we were honest we would rename these whales to show what they have suffered:
Dragged, Drowned, Tortured,
Starved, Bereaved, Mutilated.
