The Mother Tongue: English and How It Got That Way
by Bill Bryson
This was absolutely fascinating! It makes me want to get another degree, this one in linguistics. I definitely think I learned a lot, and the text wasn’t difficult to understand, which I appreciated.
Ordinarily, I might give this 4 stars because it’s a bit out of date and at times politically incorrect, but I have a first edition copy and I’d assume that most of that has been edited out by now.
As a whole I thought this was very interesting and provided good insight into the formation, present, and potential futures of the English language.
