The Bone Houses
by Emily Lloyd-Jones
I was attacked by a goat when I was 5, and I’ve hated them since. The goat just hauled back & rammed me in my stomach with his horns, knocked me back a ways, and I couldn’t breath for a long time. There was much panic by everyone around me, but I don’t remember much after that. I think my dad got him at a discount because he was mean as shit and no one wanted him. I honestly can’t say why we even had a goat or why we kept him after that.
Anyway, there’s a goat in this story that does a lot of ramming. I drew in a breath every time she did. But, she’s written in such a way I couldn’t help but adore her. She’s also dead for most of the story but that doesn’t stop her from protecting her family. I absolutely loved her as much as I loved this story. Plus, she's super integral to the story, not just as a protector or to add those light moments, but also helping to lead the story along a path.
There's a lot of mystery to the story, and so many stories wrapped into the main one. You get a sense that there's a lot more going on than what you or the main characters know, and Emily Lloyd-Jones does a fantastic job weaving all these little details and nuances into it. She very subtly introduces new twists, questions, uncertainties, and more as we work our way to the main mission.
There’s so much to love about this book. The writing is beautiful. There’s stories within stories. There’s mystery, intrigue, adventure, daring, and plenty of frights. Lloyd-Jones added so much rich language and detail I felt I was there. I shared the fear, tears, cold shivers, pain, and adrenaline rushes of our protagonists as they marched toward their destination not entirely sure they would make it or if their plans would even work. They had to stop a curse, even as it might cause pain for so many, themselves included. Sometimes sacrifices have to be made, and those sacrifices are the hardest to come to terms with. I had a rough time making it through the last part as I was just sobbing. It was beautiful and painful as it would be IRL. Hell, I’m shedding tears as I write this recalling that part. It’s just so good.
