Gearbreakers by Zoe Hana Mikuta

Oh, how I struggled to get my bearings with this book and never truly succeeded.

That said, this had a lot of good to it. A lot of the reason I felt so confused is because the narrators' voices on the audiobook both sounded extremely similar, to the point where, if I got even momentarily distracted, I would often forget whose chapter I was on. I know if I ever heard these narrators again out of context of this book (and probably even in the book's context) I would not be able to tell you which one narrated for which character in this book.

And while much of that indistinction between the two leads comes down to the narration, a good amount of it does come down to the writing. Even though their actual dialogue is pretty distinct, their inner thoughts and the way they view the world really aren't.

The general vibe of the book felt pretty paint-by-numbers as well, and Eris specifically has some pretty cringey dialogue. I did enjoy some of the character moments and the romance, but beyond that this just wasn't for me.
