Good Night, Mr. Holmes by Carole Nelson Douglas
5.0

I read this for a Cozy Mysteries Book Club I belong to, and I have to say, I loved this book. I will leave you with this caveat: I have not ready any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes series so I can't compare them much to this book, in all fairness. I will say that I do know that this story came into being thanks to The Scandal in Bohemia by Conan Doyle. So, if you're like me and you haven't read any Conan Doyle, and you like Good Night, Mr. Holmes, I guess starting with that novel in the series would be as good as any to start. After reading this and discussing it in a book club, I am definitely going to be checking out some Conan Doyle soon.

In this novel, I loved the protagonist, Irene Adler, smart, daring, funny. Her protégée, Nell Huxleigh, is a quick study and brings her version of Victorian morality to the table juxtaposed with her recently acquired distaste for the lack of autonomy experienced by women in that era. A woman acknowledged by Holmes for her intellect, Irene Adler is an actress, and an American one at that. She observes people and places, righting wrongs where she sees fit. She's sassy and likeable. Nell, on the other hand, consistently appears to be shocked by Ms. Adler, and I found her to be sweet and amusing. In fact, I'd have to say that I loved most of the characters in this book.

Giving it a five star rating because it was a fun read and a welcomed break from the pandemic and everything else. :)
