Normal People by Sally Rooney

5.0

Rooney's writing style deeply encouraged me to continue reading page after page, and I didn't want to put the book down. I am a college student, and reading about the ways in which the main characters evolved emotionally and intellectually throughout high school and college provided me with a sense comfort. I found I was able to relate to the characters mainly through the endless revelations they had as they continued to learn about life. I found the ending to be surprisingly unsatisfactory, and had hoped for something that felt more conclusive. However, this may be Rooney's way of emulating the often displeasing closure of different periods of our lives.

I would like to read work written by Rooney again in the future. Her descriptive word choices make even the most banal details seem to be full of excitement. The way in which she writes about specific features, like a leaf on a tree, or the color of the sky, seemingly give trite observations made by the main characters a deeper meaning.
