The Grownup by Gillian Flynn
4.0
This short little story (I think it's technically too long to be a short story, but 60 pages is a very slight novel) packs quite the punch in its brevity. Readers of Gillian Flynn's other fiction will recognize her signature style is morally ambiguous characters who get themselves into convoluted situations. There is a great balance between paranoia and losing a grip on reality, as our protagonist is certainly more relatable than Amazing Amy, but still doesn't come off as completely reliable. The haunted house atmosphere mixed with the contemporary setting makes this seem like its "modern gothic". Flynn's characters continue to be terrifying, which is what makes this such a compelling and speedy read.
