Wearing God: Clothing, Laughter, Fire, and Other Overlooked Ways of Meeting God
by Lauren F. Winner
Absolutely my favorite of Lauren Winner's books. She expands on the everyday meditations of still, centering her reflections on scripture passages. But Winner also puts her bookworm habits to good use, weaving a lovely constellation of literary references ranging from rabbinic texts to medieval saints to modern writers. (There are ample footnotes and recommendations if you're into that.) The end result is a truly inspiring invitation to meditate on the material culture of divine presence. Her analysis of my namesake Sarah's sarcastic laughter is worth the price of admission.
Years of academic study and personal growth are apparent here. There are plenty of personal anecdotes, but they mostly celebrate others' insights rather than scream out for attention. Winner makes some coy references to a second husband, but gives few details beyond his existence. While I admit I'm awfully curious for more info on her personal life, it's a refreshing change how she has kept it out of the spotlight.
