since 2022 i started consuming this story in 2 different forms - first the manhua, then the donghua - but both times i stopped myself from actually delving into it properly because neither were complete works. but shortly after around that time the announcement abut 7seas publishing the whole original novel series in english came out and i thought it'd be the perfect time to wait till the whole story came out to the binge read it. the reason for all of this is that i always knew i'd eat this series up like there's no tomorrow. sometimes you just see a fixation coming from a mile away, years ahead, and sometimes you try to be smart about it so it can take you in one go. so here i am, finally letting it take me.

the first volume to heaven official's blessing is 80% a story i already encountered in manhua and donhua forms. both times i stopped just before the last arc of it concluded, so i still found myself motivated to see how it all wrapped up and what note the book ended on. unsurprisingly, i was satisfied with it all, i found myself enjoying everything, even reading about the bits i've already seen adapted. i'm not sure how good the translation is since i don't know chinese but as for the reading experience it seemed to flow naturally. it's very easy to get invested in both the cast and the plot and you'll forget about page counts and the time passing by super quick.

xie lian is a main protagonist who was made in a laboratory just for me. i love tortured heroes who remain strong in the face of tragedy and all the suffering that befall them. when such character keeps on going with a smile while enduring, my heart trembles and my attachment amps up to levels previously unseen. this is only the second work i read from mxtx but it seems she perfected the recipe to suit my tastes in this regard and i can't wait to see all the delicious ways she'll break my heart through xie lian.

on the other hand hua cheng has the perfect blue print to steal my heart. i adore a man who is unspeakable levels of down bad for their love interest. i don't actually know much of any spoilers for this series but one thing i've always known is that hua cheng's dedication and levels of down bad for xie lian is legendary and even just this first taste of it is already making me overly excited to see more. i love his sharp wit and easy mood changes. he's also described beautifully in the novel which makes me appreciate all the illustrations i've ever seen of this man. they did him justice!

this first volume covers 2 case arcs, plus first encounters and introductions of our mains. throughout all xie lian's narration remains calm but sharp with observation. oftentimes he seems like an airhead but then proves to be the mind that figures each case out with a keen eye. my most favorite aspect is how as a reader you can already feel those 800 years behind him, even without fully unveiling all that happened to him you can still sense that there'd been an overwhelming number of misfortunes befalling him that whittled him down into the resilient but overly humble person he is in this introductory volume. i'm already invested in getting to know more about it all, even if most of it will probably hurt reading about.

4 stars for this first volume, but i'm sure it's only just the beginning of a perfect 5 starter series!
