Julie Olivia has done it again. Off the Hook is an amazing start to what will be a five-book series set in a small coastal Massachusetts town. We start with Wendy, an elementary school teacher who moved back home after a falling out with her boyfriend, and Jasper, the oldest of the Davie siblings and a single dad to six-year-old Sam.

I really love the family dynamics at play. Wendy was once engaged to Jasper’s younger brother Peter, but that didn’t work out. To watch both Wendy and Jasper navigate their growing feelings with the guilt and other emotions they feel regarding Wendy’s previous relationship was a welcome change of pace from other romance books I’ve read recently.

The invisible string between Wendy and Jasper is to die for, especially once they stop ignoring it and give in to what they both want. It’s clearly a decision they both struggle with because of their family history, but it was so nice to see them take something for themselves. Both are characters who always put others before themselves, and it’s great when they finally realize they need to prioritize their own well-being.

I really enjoy that, though we don’t see it through his eyes, it’s clear there is character growth for Peter and others in the whole situation, and I’m excited to see where that leads them in what (I presume) will one day be their own books.

And, my favorite scene? When they go to get snacks after jumping off a cliff. 👀
