One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus

5.0

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING

(Check the triggers before deciding to read it, there is serious stuff
leukemia, death, police investigation, mention of drugs, poisoning, death by allergy, suffocation, discussion of suicide, discussion of shooting in schools, drug addition mention, alcohol addiction, slut shaming, depression, possibly more
)

I’m struggling to find contemporary novels worth the read, and I wish I’d picked this one up before.

So, first thing first, I rewatched the Breakfast Club right at the beginning of my One of Us Is Lying journey (I love John, change my mind) AND IT MADE IT 1937281% BETTER you should watch it if you still haven’t.

Let’s talk about the book now.

The characters are brilliant. They’re so easy to get attached to. I hadn’t experienced that in a while. Stereotypes who? When you dig under the surface you find intricate stories and complex emotions and I’M HERE FOR IT.

This book has of the best friend groups in YA novels. In the same club as the Rampion crew imo. LOVE the binding, the getting to know each other despite the prejudices, the stand up for your friends, the solidarity.

Siblings! love! SIBLINGS! LOVE! Sisters sticking together. YES

The mystery... if you don’t guess who the guilty party is by the third chapter (lmao, Agatha Christie formed me), then you’re in for a SURPRISE. If you’re like me and your neurons decide to connect only to ruin you a good YA mystery, you’ll still have a blast discovering the motive, execution, and details that surround the death.

(Something nagged at my brain after I finished reading: how in the world did Simon discover so many secrets? It wasn’t explained, and that was a bit annoying, but it’s just a small detail.)

This book kept me up at night with its fast pace and suspense. I want to climb on a roof and scream how much I loved it.

(Leaving this here: it reminds me a lot of The List, by Siobhan Vivian, so if you’ve enjoyed it, this is probably a good choice.)
