Decent and insightful exploration of the male gaze; how women, especially young women, are viewed by men. The voyeuristic, often unsettling, way in which the story is narrated does well to showcase how the Lisbon sisters are merely vessels that the boys project their desire and boredom upon, rather than characters themselves. The ownership the boys feel over the sisters’ lives, how they mystify them and their intrusive fascination with the girls is really well conveyed. Some large segments of the book are random and rambling, which slightly distracts from the plot itself.
